What are the Risk factors for Glaucoma?

  • Age: In most cases, glaucoma can develop after the age of forty. The risk of getting glaucoma then increases with age.
  • Gender: There is no confirmed difference in the incidence of glaucoma between males and females.
  • Family History: Family members of a person with glaucoma have a 10 times greater chance of also getting glaucoma. Screening family members is essential.
  • Eye pressure: People with higher intra ocular pressures are at higher risk of getting glaucoma. It must be noted that the pressure alone does not indicate glaucoma, but rather whether there is damage to the optic nerve.
  • Other Factors: Racial ancestry, family history, high myopia, high blood pressure, diabetes, eye injury
